Well, none of us is allowed speak about it… But according to rumours, by making “mistakes”, one evokes the @GrimReaper himself. She (and sometimes he) then swings her mighty scythe and strikes a devastating blow upon this upstart, that durst to color a cube untruthful! Lest we forget to always do our best…
Another (in my opinion really boring) explanation is the following:
Your results are compared to those of other players. If you do something wrong, there are still some more people, which colored the same cube (hopefully correct). The final result is therefore determined by majority decision.
In rare cases, where the majority failed and added a wrong path, the GrimReaper (a staff member) will cut this wrong branch.
