Growing Pains

Hi all,

I just wanted to give everyone an update since you’ve probably been seeing some fairly odd behavior recently.  As we go forward, we are trying to experiment with different methods of combining all the results that you produce into a useful scientific output.  To that end, our plan for this weekend was to introduce a new cell (Cell 7) which has 3 different starting seeds, and vary how we process each of the different branches.  Unfortunately, as you might guess, introducing new features right before the weekend is not the best of ideas.  A number of people noticed tasks which included mergers.  Thanks for pointing those out for us.  It’s one of the things that helped us to identify the problems we were having.  In order to clean things up, we deleted some of the invalid tasks that were generated.  As a result, you may have lost a few points from tasks you did over the weekend.  You may also see the same task again as we restart Cell 7.  We’re sorry about all these issues, and we’ll try to avoid further bumps in the future.  Thanks for coming along with us for the ride!

On a more positive note, the reason that we are starting a new cell in the first place is that we are totally done with Cell 5!  Congrats on the great work everyone!

Matt

So Cell 5 is done, that’s great! But… can we see it? It’s gone from the overview! Maybe a ‘completed cells’ section…

I think I’m doing Cell 7 now, but in the overview is all black…

Hi eluchinat,

There are photos of Cell 5 on the EyeWire facebook page.

Ah, thanks. But what about the 3D view?

Hi @eluchinat

The overview is updated once a day, early in the morning, aggregating all the things we’ve done during the previous day. So we should be able to provide the overview of cell 7 by tomorrow morning.

We do it once a day because the computation and file I/O for the process is pretty heavy, but we are looking for a way to do it quickly. If we succeed, we could have the overview that is updated virtually in real time.

In all our haste to get new cells up and running, we forgot to show the old cells.  We’ll try to get the 3d view of the old cells up soon.

What would be nice is to have a separate page for completed neurons (say, between Overview and Sign Out). It could be a list which shows the cell number, the date started, the date ended, the number of days from start to end, the cell type (with link to wiki), any other statistic, and a link to a 3D view.
