Hmm, I’m not sure what that is exactly. I’ll have to ask. However, the slices you are looking at are not fMRI images or something like that. These are mouse retinal slices that were block face scanned on an electron microscope once they were removed from the mouse. It’s possible for deformations and blur to sneak in if the sample bent a little while on the scanner (it scans the sample’s face, then cuts away a thin layer with a laser, then scans again).

Usually when we get black stuff like this it’s because the cell was almost exactly flat at that point, and we basically cut the cell wall in half for a large portion of it.  If you scroll up or down a few slices, I’d bet that there is a neuron going horizontally just above or below this slice.
