Arbitration Game

And just to head off the inevitable followup question, no, it’s not actual dust.  That’s just the term that we use to describe tiny fragments.  In general, they are found in the parts of the images which are fuzzier or otherwise harder to see.  The machine learning piece has a hard time attributing the dust to any of the neurons which it is adjacent to, so it just breaks it off as it’s own piece.

Just had an idea, maybe someone can start a glossary of terms on the Wiki that we can refer people to if they don’t know what a term means.

In what I like to think of as a nice symmetry and getting to an age (66) when it seems increasingly important I play the game as brain/eye exercise. “Dusting” does that and satisfies a typically latent desire for tidiness. But it probably consumes an unreasonable amount of time for what I guess is not much contribution to the science unless axon thickness becomes important. I’ll probably try to cut back and focus on bigger additions.

Ah thanks for that.  I spend a considerable proportion of my time on dust… going back and forth with and without the blue to determine if it really is attached.

Matt, this URL https://play.eyewire.org/?mode=1 just takes me to “regular” eyewire too (Safari)

Dare I ask the same question?  Are you logged in?

Yes, works in FireFox browser

Too boring, though, with only the two buttons… I prefer regular

I imagine it’s probably a personal preference. I enjoy both… it’s nice to have a look at how other people are marking.  There have been times when I finished marking something and only got 20 points for it.  I wasn’t sure if it was because I did it quickly (or didn’t add much) or because I got it wrong. It could be nice to have the option after you finish an image, to then see it in the arbitration game as a bit of a sanity check (if that makes sense).

@smalljude Yeah, we’ve definitely had similar thoughts.  Do you guys think doing such a thing would be helpful for teaching new players?

Yes, I DO think it would be useful for teaching new players… best if you could add the red/green wrong/correct

@smalljude Yeah, we've definitely had similar thoughts.  Do you guys think doing such a thing would be helpful for teaching new players?

I personally think it could be useful. It’s not like it’s a really hard thing to do, but when you’re first doing it, seeing how others have marked could be helpful.

Any thoughts on a new name for it?  Arbitration Game describes what the game does, but it sort of sounds like The Hunger Games meets Law School.

Just wondered if there were any plans for this to be brought online? SInce I’ve run out of regular images to work on, this would be a good time filler until more comes online.

(I couldn’t think of any clever names… all that came to mind was The Eyes Have It which sucks!)

Hey @smalljude,

Not in the short term, but we didn’t really get enough data during the initial test to evaluate whether it helped produce more accurate results. At some point I will get the framework working again with new eyewire.

Not related to the arbitration game: I’m making a small change tomorrow which should give you a few hundred new cubes to trace. So maybe give it a try in the early afternoon.

Okay, I’ve made the change – new cubes are being spawned now. Hopefully this gives you some stuff to do.

This hasn’t fixed the core issue of requiring consensus between multiple users for a cell to grow (which is largely what has been keeping you waiting for new cubes). I’m currently working on weighting users based on expertise, which should help with that.

In the short term, though, there will be about 400 more cubes for you to trace (they’re coming online incrementally over the next 24 hours).

Yay!  That’s awesome Mark. A nice thing to wake up to!  I’m looking forward to getting stuck in again.   Thanks for all the work you put in

I was wondering if the arbitration game is anywhere near general release? While I wait for new cubes to come online I’d love to be doing something useful.  :)

Hey @smalljude

For the moment we’ve tabled the arbitration game. I’ve got some new changes which should have a positive effect on the rate at which new cubes are generated. I’m hoping to push this stuff either tomorrow afternoon or Monday, I’ll let you know.

Thanks so much Mark. I’m looking forward to it. It would be hard to describe how much I enjoy doing this and contributing a teeny tiny bit to science.  :)
